Tom Piatak, a West Point graduate and Gulf War veteran, discovered his interest in logistics while serving in the Army. After earning an MBA and working at CSX in Jacksonville, he and his wife, Patty, founded Magellan Transport Logistics in 2006. Starting small, they restructured the company during the financial crisis, leading it to become the largest Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned logistics firm in the U.S., now generating $320 million annually.

The Piataks run six businesses, including a tech firm, real estate holdings, and the UK’s Carlisle United Football Club. Despite international ventures, they remain deeply tied to Jacksonville and credit UNF for supplying top logistics talent — many Magellan employees, including their children, are UNF graduates. Piatak’s success reflects his values of resilience, education, and a strong ownership mindset.
